SK Telecom, Shinsegi to Lower Mobile Call Rates, Paper Says

--From AOL.-- Cooters

Seoul, June 28 (Bloomberg) -- SK Telecom Co., which since its acquisition of Shinsegi Telecom Co. has more that half of Korea's cellular phone users, said it will lower its call rates, the Seoul Economic Daily reported on its Web site, citing an unidentified person at the company. The report quoted the person as saying the company has requested permission from the Ministry of Information and Communication to lower its rates from next month. The report said SK's mobile-phone service rivals -- Korea Telecom Freetel Corp, Hansol M.com Co. and LG Telecom Co. -- will find it difficult to lower their rates, though they are planning other incentives, such as lowering initial connection charges.

From June 1, Korea banned mobile phone service providers from offering handset subsidies to attract new subscribers.
