The investment options to not include gold funds is because of their recent poor performance. Once they are the best-performing sector group (in the next recession), lots of 401K plans will have them, since employees will more loudly insist on it. Concerns about gold share Illiquidity are only for short sellers in a recession! The prices of gold mining shares will be rising very rapidly in a recession BECAUSE they are so relatively illiquid.
