Don't forget the "Communism" part. I understand brother Raul is next in line, but who knows if he has what it takes. If people get tired enough of being poor, a leader may emerge to challenge the old guard and the existing economic structure. I bet that if a new leader allowed some free markets and talked about maybe restoring some of the exiles' property, whether or not there was real democracy, we'd see some normalization of relations between the US and Cuba.

Do we really want an extension of Miami into Cuba ?

Not me...and I agree that a slower rehabilitation might be better, perhaps less wrenching than a sudden influx of money and Uncle Joses from Hileah. But I don't think the Miami Cuban exile community will ever have the influence in Cuba itself that they think they will.
