Nokia Says Operators Could Double Sales With Next-Gen Phones
New York, June 28 (Bloomberg) -- Nokia Oyj, the world's biggest cellular phone maker, said telecommunications providers such as AT&T Wireless Group and Sprint Corp. could double their revenue per customer by offering new wireless services.
Nokia executives spoke to financial analysts in New York at a conference on next-generation mobile-phone network technology. Next- or so-called third-generation, phones have Internet access, video capabilities and various entertainment options.
The average wireless customer spent $41.24 per month to make local calls in December, according to the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, which tracks wireless industry information.
``High-quality and a good set of services are the key'' to doubling revenue, Nokia spokeswoman Arja Suominen said.
The Finnish company, which is expected to earn about 30 percent of its revenue this year from sales of network equipment, is trying to take market share away from Ericsson AB, the world's biggest seller of wireless infrastructure equipment.
Nokia shares fell 1 3/8 to 50 1/2 in midafternoon trading. They've risen 6 percent this year.
