Satellite TV growing at cable's expense-study

NEW YORK, June 28 (Reuters) - Satellite television is
growing at the expense of cable, according to a study released
Wednesday by the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications
Association and the Yankee Group.
The study shows that digital broadcast satellite (DBS)
service is making significant inroads in areas that have cable
TV systems. Of new DBS subscribers, 70 percent have cable
available to their household.
Local TV stations are available via satellite providers in
about 46 percent of all DBS households and 56 percent of new
DBS households.
"These numbers are very encouraging, but this is not a time
for complacency," said Chuck Hewitt, president of the Satellite
Broadcasting and Communications Association, a trade group.
Banc of America said in a research report Wednesday that it
has maintained for the past few months that the sentiment that
DBS is going to kill cable is too extreme.
The firm believes the sentiment could swing back to cable
in the second half of the year because digital cable will be
widely available by the end of the year, and DBS operators are
going to face tough comparables in the fourth quarter.
It also said recent data suggests DBS growth may be slowing
somewhat, which could cause a sentiment shift to happen
sooner-than-expected.
In December, satellite television services began offering
local broadcast stations in the largest U.S. cities after
President Clinton signed a law allowing such service.
Industry officials said the new law would encourage
consumers who had stayed with cable service in order to see
local stations make the move to satellite service.
