AMD names newest chip for PCs and laptops Athlon Ultra
Vancouver, Wash., June 28 (PKnews wire) - AMD Corp. (NYSE:AMD - news), the world's largest supplier of high performance computer-chips, on Wednesday announced that it will call its newest microprocessors for personal computers and laptops the Athlon Ultra and the Athlon Ultra Mobile.

Known until now by their code names "Mustang" and Corvette", the names are hardly a surprise as the chips are intended for the ultra high performance market space. AMD names its chips to reflect the performance and value that they provide. AMD's current Athlon chip -- which functions as the ``brains'' of 12 out of every 13 of the highest performing 1 Ghz PCs on the market today -- has recently become synonymous with the fastest x86 compatible processors in the world.

The Athlon Ultras will be introduced in the second half of this year and are aimed at offering ultra performance, including enhanced graphics, video, and other 'surprises'.

Athlon Ultra is expected to be clock and performance competitive with Intel's Pentium 4 chip at the time of its introduction, while offering better value to consumers.

AMD's statement quickly follows a similar announcement made by Intel this afternoon. Many critics complain that Intel's announcement may be premature; due to their ongoing manufacturing problems and inability to meet customer commitments."
