Both city-states supposedly had various "Vimanas" (flying machines) that operated by means of a "mercury engine." The sounds they made when operating seem similar (from the descriptions in the written text) to that of a jet or rocket engine.

These people were at war. I do not think they were under the impression that they were being attacked by gods, rather they were under attack by their enemy city-state that had perfected a new type of weapon.
