"No company cares more about profits than we do," said Bezos responding to a query about the company's "profit prognosis." "We believe this is a time to grow the business."

I think Orwell would have been quite impressed by Bezos' mastery of double-speak (love is hate, war is peace - or in the case of Amazon, "losses are profitable").

"Bezos told PC Expo attendees that Amazon.com expects to generate sufficient cash flow to fund its operations by the end of 2000. Noting that the company currently has $1 billion in cash, Bezos said he believes, if need be, Amazon.com would have no problem getting additional funding in the capital markets."

This kind of sounds like Bezos was saying, "Sure, we will generate enough cash to fund our operations - even if we have to sell more bonds!"
