Perhaps "mercury engine" was a mistranslation?
You see, mercury vapor is toxic!!! (BTW, Carol Lewis' Mad Hatter in "Alice in Wonderland" went mad because of his prolonged exposure to mercury/mercury compounds.)

Unless some ways of ensuring that mercury did not pollute the environment and harm living things were known at that time, it is difficult to imagine the widespread use of those "mercury engines".

Could it be that the use of those engines contributed to the attrition/decimation of the warring parties?
