nbfm: There are at least two possibilities re: the Texas Instrument move toward CDMA capability. (Probably more)

One is the timing closely follows the Nokia move to buy phones in Korea from a company which uses Qualcomm's chips.

Up to now, Texas Instruments has been the key supplier for Nokia. So TXN may be reacting to a threat of competition from Qualcomm (indirectly) in the chip supply to Nokia.

Two is that TXN has had a major gap in its product line - CDMA. TXN has been the major GSM supplier but zero in CDMA.

So this may simply be an opening move toward CDMA.

The fascinating point is that DOT Wireless seems to have no license from Qualcomm of any kind. And TXN has none.

(Note: Per Ruffian DOT Wireless may have a license to supply CDMA related "support products" even though probably not a "chip" or "handset" license.)

So sometime, somehow, if TXN continues to commercial production of chips, a Q license will be required.

So far, assume DOT Wireless is just "testing" and probably getting ready to supply WCDMA.

Texas Instruments is probably the number one telecom chip challenge to Qualcomm, but that is entirely up to what Qualcomm decides to do.

Doesn't seem possible that TXN will be able to "work around" the Q's patents, but the company may try to do just that.

Suggest this is important as either a major positive, or a potential major challenge.

Time will tell.

Note: Just saw Ruffian's post, so looks like this is more likely to be a positive for Qualcomm than not. Good news.

Best.
