John, the IBM computer in that article is a supercomputer, which is different from a conventional mainframe. Supercomputers are generally for very specific applications, like oil exploration, weather, or chess playing. ;-) Mainframes are general purpose, as much so as an NT or Unix machine, except they run different software.

I can't say whether or not they're dead, or some old friends might kill me (as if my opinion is worth more than a hill of beans).
