This time they spent plenty of Disney Dollars, and Rick Sayre chose to get what he wanted. i'll be getting render comparison stats soon. i missed the SGI press release where they named a dollar figure for the 60 Octanes. SGI is an upstart in computer graphics by Pixar standards. the only thing i question about the Sun choice is the 100 baseT network, for this stuff one needs a real network. yes, SGI gets the screen shots on Movie Magic, but i'd rather have the sales commision for the Sun deal. (how much is a 672 processor O2000?) Alias just ported it's renderer to NT because no studio can justify using SGI iron for a comodity task like rendering.Just as it would be foolish to give an animator less than the fastest interactive box available, with what animators get paid. then there's the issue of Sun being able to get 14 processors into a 13.5" x 19.7" x 22" package, vs SGI needing a three bedroom apartment.
