Worldwide Semiconductor Sales Reach Industry High Totaling
$15.8 Billion in May 2000
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 2000--Worldwide
sales of semiconductors reached an all time record high of
$15.8 billion in May 2000, increasing from $11.3 billion
from May 1999, a 39.8% year-to-year increase, the
Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported today.

``May's strong global sales are in-line with our recently
released mid-year forecast that predicts a 31% growth rate
for 2000,'' said George Scalise, SIA president.

On June 7th, the SIA released its 2000 Mid-year Industry
Forecast. The forecast predicted that the growth of the
semiconductor industry will reach $195 billion in 2000 and
will expand to 25% to $244 billion in 2001. The market is
expected to continue its momentum in 2002 with sales of
$279 billion and a 14 percent increase.

In addition to microprocessors and DRAMs which are used in
PCs, semiconductor products that played a major role in
May's sales included Standard Linear, Field Programmable
Logic Devices (FPLDs), Digital Signal Processors (DSP), and
Flash memory which are all commonly found in communications products.

In May, the Asia Pacific and Japan markets grew 45.8 % and
43.6 %, respectively from last year. The Americas market
was up 32.5 % from last year, and Europe's sales grew 40%.

The SIA's Global Sales Report (GSR) is a three month moving
average of sales activity. The GSR is tabulated by the
World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization,
which represent some 70 companies.

The SIA is the leading voice for the semiconductor industry
and has represented U.S.-based manufacturers since 1977.
SIA member companies comprise more than 90 percent of US-
based semiconductor production. Collectively, the chip
industry employs a domestic workforce of 284,000 people.
