Qualcomm Lays Off 200 Employees
SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Wireless communications technology developer Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) said on Thursday it was firing some 200 employees, or nearly 3 percent of its 7,000-member workforce.

``We had just about 200 positions eliminated,'' Qualcomm spokeswoman Christine Trimble told Reuters, after trading had closed on the Nasdaq.

Qualcomm's shares lost 2-1/16 to 61-1/2 each, to its lowest levels seen this year.

``We conducted an evaluation of the skill set of employees against the company's needs and future business needs and made adjustments,'' she added.

The company recently announced it expected reduced orders from key Asia market, South Korea, but Trimble said the layoffs were unrelated and were part of an effort to streamline Qualcomm's operations. The bulk of the layoffs would be in San Diego, she added.
