What is telling you that you are runnung out of OS resources? This happens rarely and likely is due to special applications running that you or I are unlikely to run across. It is more likely a memory related issue if you are running out of something. Do you have your Win98 set up as a network computer? This can help with the performamce by allocating more buffer for a disk cache. But will not help you if you are running out of memory. To give you an idea of the memory requirements, after upgrading to 256M RAM, I only had 40M free. Please reread the last sentence so the significance can sink in. This is how much of a memory hog most of these trading applications are to my own great surprise. I would not go to an OS like the WinNT that has been replaced by another. Instead I would wait for Microsoft to work out the problems with the Win2000 OS. I am finding Win98 adequate for my uses even though definitely far from perfect, like Windows Internet Explorer blowing up on me from time to time but not frequently.

The PII chips are much faster than the AMD chips. I have seen this myself. However, the exceptions may be the AMD K3 and certainly the Athelon. The Athelon is part marketing bullshit, but in actual tests, in some areas it is faster. Now if the Athelon is running on the chipset that is also available from AMD, and has a certain unique memory feature turned on, then it is a very fast processor compared to the PII. The Athelon is still pretty new as far as available motherboard chipsets go, so I steer away from this until a well-performing non-AMD chipset motherboard becomes available that has been tested in the field for at least 6 months. So instead I built my PC from an Intel motherboard that has a very fast memory management module which worked out to be a very fast combination when clocked to 133 FSB. Believe me when I saw I was very reluctant to leave the AMD platform behind. Also I suggest to stay away from the new Intel processors. Their memory management scheme is all f*cked up. Whoever put that one together could not see the forest from the trees. I think the Athelon is the way to go once good performing and well-proven motherboards come out. Until then, I would go for a BX chipset based motherboar with a PII 600 or higher. A new BX replacement is coming out shortly that may be interesting.

I do think it is in your best interest to get a system monitor type of software to seee what you are actually running out of.

Good luck!
