Compaq recovering
--11:02 am - By Susan Lerner
Shares of Compaq Computer (CPQ: news, msgs) are recovering Friday, rising
13/16 from Thursday's NYSE close to 25 5/16 as the Street jumps to the
computer maker's defense following Salomon Smith Barney's downgrade of the
stock, which left shares with a 14 percent loss Thursday. After the close
Thursday, Compaq responded to the downgrade with a press release in which it
stated it was "comfortable with channel inventory levels." Firms including
Prudential, Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette and Merrill Lynch have all come out in
support of Compaq. Typical were comments from DLJ analyst Kimberly Alexy
who told clients that Thursday's weakness presents investors with "an
immediate buying opportunity" and said she still feels profitability trends are
tracking ahead of plan.
