To thread:

Since SI's problems in the past day have compromised the basic integrity of the site, and since SI has chosen (by failing to deploy necessary resources in the face of past problems) to make us live with these issues, I have chosen to take a hiatus. It may only last a few days, and I will be stopping by to read posts, but I will not write anything until the site's integrity has been restored to my satisfaction.

I also believe (as I wrote to JXM in a PM earlier today) that when a company has been given chances to fix things and has chosen not to, the only true weapons at the disposal of consumers are the media and lawyers.

I have e-mailed an editor of the Wall Street Journal to inform them of the issues which have arisen. I have previously corresponded with this editor about non-SI stuff and hope that he will follow up. I also believe that when people's privacy is invaded by disclosure of their actual name instead of pseudonyms and when posts can be changed and when people pay for a service which does not work, there are legal remedies there.

When I had a dispute with Dell earlier this week, their customer service people had no interest in fixing it. When I e-mailed their law department and pointed out similarities between what they were doing and similar conduct by AOL which had resulted in millions in liability, the problem was resolved in less than one day.

It is a sad commentary on our business culture that companies choose to behave in this manner. For their behavior in allowing things to happen is exactly that, a choice. Don't forget that.

I hope to be back next week or the week after. Have a great Fourth of July weekend everybody, and Gloop, have an extra brat for me.
