All were hanged except for poor old Giles Corey, who suffered the horrible fate of Piene Forte Et Dure --he was pressed to death by a huge boulder. 13 women and 5 men.. and then some died awaiting trial or death in prison, including an infant. If memory serves, one of the girls happened to accuse the wife of the judge or some authority, which proved to be a tactical error.<p>
LIke you, I wondered if Chris' emphasis on the fact that they were not BURNED was supposed to make us view this proud moment in our Chistian heritage more forgivingly! <p>
While only a "small" number were put to death here in New England, thousands were being tortured and burned at the stake in Europe, encouraged by the order of Pope Innocent VIII, who spoke against witches ex cathedra causing a huge response in the clergy, who took it upon themselves to help God out- I guess they thought it was just too much for Him to handle alone. People seem to think God needs a lot of assistance in assigning guilt and punishing the alleged offenders. <p>
