Alcatel DSL Platform Wins Governor's New Product Award

BusinessWire, 06/30/2000 10:41

RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 2000--

Professional Engineers of North Carolina Select Alcatel ATM

Subscriber Access Multiplexer from Competitive Field

Alcatel, the world's leading provider of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology, announces that its market leading Alcatel 1000 Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Subscriber Access Multiplexer (ASAM) has been selected to receive the North Carolina 2000 Governor's New Product Award. The Governor's New Product Award recognizes products for excellence in design and for their contribution to the economy of North Carolina. Awards are presented in four categories, defined by company size: small, medium, large, and "mega." Alcatel is winner of the "mega" category with the Alcatel 1000 ASAM.

The Alcatel 1000 ASAM is the world's most widely deployed DSL platform. It enables a new level of services and deployment options to savvy communication service providers and carriers who want to capitalize on the exploding DSL market. The Alcatel ASAM features advanced ATM functionality including support for multiple quality-of-service classes and support for switched virtual circuits. These features simplify network provisioning and enable service providers to offer a wide variety of value-added services for applications such as telecommuting, virtual private networks, toll-quality voice conversations over DSL, and video, over a single copper pair using existing telecommunications infrastructure.

"We are gratified that the success of this product enables us to make a meaningful contribution to the local economy, and very proud of our Raleigh-based DSL team," said Hal Thorne, group vice president for Alcatel Access Systems. "A number of excellent products contended for the award, and the selection of the Alcatel 1000 ASAM is further evidence of Alcatel's leadership in DSL."

The Governor's New Product Award program is sponsored by the Professional Engineers of North Carolina with cooperation from the Governor's Office, the North Carolina Department of Commerce, and the North Carolina State University Industrial Extension Service. By winning the Governor's New Product Award, the Alcatel 1000 ASAM advances to national competition sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers, where North Carolina has produced several winners in past years.
