Programming sabotage - Article on how Microsoft tried to sabotage Real.

upside.com

"...Remember when Real Networks (RNWK) CEO Rob Glaser testified that Microsoft had specifically made modifications to Windows so that the Real Networks Media Player would no longer work on its OS? Microsoft claimed the problem was merely a bug in Real's product.

Well, I don't know if the specific example Glaser showed was a purposeful glitch introduced by Microsoft, but St. John confirms that Microsoft programmers were told to do whatever was necessary to break the Real Media Player, giving the advantage to Microsoft's streaming media player.

He confirms that there are hidden system calls buried in new versions of Windows that outside applications programmers are not told about -- this is just the type of stuff the DOJ accuses Microsoft of doing. DoJ hopes that splitting the OS group into a separate company would finally get it to treat all apps developers equally.

I'm not sure that would actually work, because the applications monopoly might have good incentive to trade favors with the OS monopoly in order to keep both in power, but you can see the DoJ's logic."
