Tens of thousands of digital villages connected to large back bones is a possibility. One problem with this scenario is the wide disparity of service levels offerered to different neighborhoods within nation states.

Telephone and TV accessibility is widely considered as each Americans "right" and, certainly, down the road, full digital accessibility will be a similar right. Under the village concept, how will the kids in the ghettos get the same accessibility as the affluent burbs?

My read is that economies of scale and the concept of the democratization of information access tilt the scales to the REBOCs and other major telcos. However, niche players, certainly, will always play important roles in delivering specialized services.
