June 26, 2000 --

Panasonic's
SV-SD70 MP3
player, due out in
Japan at the end of
this month, is small
enough to fit on
your wrist. Using the secure SD memory card developed by
SanDisk, Toshiba and Panasonic parent company Matsushita
Electric, it will be able to hold well over an hour of music,
depending on the capacity of the card and the level of
compression used to encode the music.

The introduction is a part of an
initiative, announced last month
by Matsushita Electric, to begin
production of SD Memory
Cards and SD Memory Card
compatible devices. On June
30, the company will introduce
(to the Japanese market) the SV-SD70, as well as an SD
Memory Card reader/writer, and both 64MB and 32MB
versions of the SD Memory Card. The reader/writer connect
to PCs through a USB port, allowing users access to MP3s
already stored on their computers.

The SV-SD70 paves the way for other devices using the SD
format. The first of these devices, in the form of a headset, will
be another MP3 player, the SV-SD01. It's slated for July 10
availability. The company plans to use the SD format in other
products including digital video cameras and cellular phones.

Though no official announcement has been made, Panasonic
spokesperson Kurt Praschak has said that the company plans
to release products using the SD Memory Card to the U.S.
market sometime later this year. He notes, however, that these
products will not be the same as those released in Japan.
Rather, he says, they will be products designed specifically for
U.S. consumers.
