Telcos Dominate Business Week's Global 1000 List
The U.S. Still has a Mighty Presence, With General Electric Returning to the No. 1 Spot, While Vodafone AirTouch and NTT DoCoMo Take the Lead for International Companies
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 29, 2000-- High-flying telcos triumph on BusinessWeek's Global 1000 roster this year. Of the top 25 companies, 10 come from the telecommunications field, as opposed to 5 in 1999. General Electric still stands at No.1 on the list with $520.25 billion in market value, but is followed by a slew of technology companies, including Intel (No. 2), Cisco Systems (No. 3), Microsoft (No. 4) and British cellphone giant Vodafone AirTouch at No. 6.
The Global 1000 ranks companies in 22 countries by market capitalization (in dollars), uncovering worldwide trends in the global economy. European companies dominate the telecom roster, with Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Nokia, as well as Ericsson. The Digital Revolution has also produced a new crop of winners in Japan, such as NTT DoCoMo (No. 8), indicating Japan's steady economic rebound. Oil companies were big winners on the list as well, with companies like Exxon Mobil Corp and Royal/Dutch Shell Group profiting from consolidations and the rising price of oil.
The triumph of technology and telecom contrasts sharply with the fortunes of many leading Old Economy players. Household names such as Coca-Cola Co. (No. 26), Procter & Gamble Co. (No. 51), and H.J Heinz Co. (No. 382) all slipped considerably in the rankings after a tough year of profit slumps and management turmoil.
