Germany sticks to planned UMTS licences auction
(UPDATE: Updates with background, detail paragraphs 6-8)

BERLIN, June 30 (Reuters) - The German government said on Friday it was sticking to plans to auction between four and six domestic UMTS third generation mobile phone licences after a newspaper reported it was considering reducing the number.

The Financial Times earlier reported, without citing sources, that Germany was considering cutting the number of licences in next month's auction amid concern consolidation in the telecoms industry would cut the proceeds from the auction.

A German Finance Ministry spokesman said the government had not changed its plans to auction between four and six licences and expected proceeds of around 20 billion marks ($9.80 billion) from the auction.

The sale could generate more than this, however, the spokesman added.

The number of contenders for German UMTS licences has fallen from an inital 12 to eight and analysts say this is linked to the recent sell-off in telecoms stocks.

Licences for the UMTS (Univeral Mobile Telecommunications Standard) will allow operators to provide video and fast Internet services via mobile phones and other wireless gadgets.

Spain's Telefonica and Finnish Sonera are bidding for a licence together in a consortium.

Germany's Mannesmann Mobilfunk, a unit of Vodafone AirTouch Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L) and Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobil division are regarded as leading contenders to win licences.
