Vodafone recommneded on international presence

Vodafone AirTouch [UK:VOD], the largest of the U.K. mobile operators, is set for a 550,000 increase. Lehman still recommended Vodafone in particular, because of its growth in international markets. The total number of subscribers will soon be close to 60 million, 9.3 million in the U.K.

Lehman estimates European subscriber growth in the second quarter of about 19 million, up more than 70 percent compared with 1999. In Germany, in particular, growth has accelerated aggressively in the last months.

The auction for third-generation licenses in Germany is set to begin on July 31 and eight telecoms groups have said they will enter.

For the growth of mobile handsets makers, such as Nokia [NOK] and Ericsson [ERICY], Lehman forecasted growth in excess of 50 percent in 2000 and sales of more than 423 million phones was seen as “moderately conservative”.
