MikeM:
Whoah! Finally able to post this.
A DSLAM is what the letters stand for, a DSL access multiplexer. But telcos provision many other services along the loop besides DSL, such as POTS, ISDN, T1, & sometimes Frame Relay. In my mind, a DLC is the deployed equipment that extends these services from the CO where they often require amplification, modulation, etc. NGDLCs, in my mind provides these services, but add newer broadband services to the mix, principally by incorporating DSLAMs into the equipment. This is what the UMC1000 did.
Now, it appears, the primary function of this category of equipment is shifting from these legacy services to DSL supported by PONs running from the CO. Hence, the nature of the equipment, though performing the same function, has changed dramatically from the days of a simple DLC.
I speak with no authority on this subject, and defer to the more technical industry folks here. Nevertheless, this is my read of what is transitioning here in an effort to respond to your question.
