Seattle Celebrity Bové, a self-described humble sheep farmer who produces milk for Roquefort cheese, also made headlines in the United States last year. He and supporters were part of the crush at the World Trade Organization conference in Seattle last December, launching a carnival of protests. Business Week magazine has named him one of the top 50 movers and shakers shaping European policy. And he has become a sort of latter-day folk hero in France, so popular that politicians who once scorned him — including President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Lionel Jospin — are now anxious to be photographed shaking his hand. The outcome of his trial could have international ramifications. “Any sentence would be something unacceptable,” Bové said, “At any rate, the verdict will be political. We are fighting for the dismissal of this case.”
Feisty And Festive There is a festival-like atmosphere in Millau. Protesters have filled the streets beating drums and waving banners saying, “The World is Not For Sale.” Some 30,000 supporters have already arrived in this town of 20,000. They have filled the town and set up camp. They are threatening to try the case in the streets if they don’t like the verdict
