Thanks Rusty,
The more people raise these kinds of questions, the more enjoyable it will be when Microsoft soon delivers on its promise and provides the environment/platform/services {:-) that enable 1000 Napsters to grow up by using Microsoft's .net environment.

Enabling third parties to more easily build and deploy new systems that compete with the established giants is what Microsoft did with DOS, that's what it did with Windows, and that's what it will do with .net. The thing that scares Sun, Oracle, et al. is that while they try unsuccessfully to hoodwink people into thinking that Microsoft is bad for consumers, they are riding the gravy train as the market for their overpriced products expands with the Internet. With .net, it's not just Microsoft that will be their competition. Microsoft will provide enabling technology for the masses. As a result, Sun and Oracle will continue to see their core businesses commoditized and their high margins deflate to the benefit of the customer and consumer. At the same time, Microsoft will enter a new growth phase by providing millions of people with an environment/platform to more easily develop and deploy their own services and billions of consumers with end user software and services as well.

All JMHO, of course.

Mike
