Netcraft -- A good service that provides useful information if taken in context and not misrepresented. Netcraft counts every host name as a web site. For example, if the German hosting company that was offline last month hosts hundreds of thousands of sites on a small number of computers running Apache, as soon as they come on line, as they did this month, Apache market share jumps noticeably and all others drop. Same thing with the 90,000 site host company that switched from Zeus to Apache. To determine the actual number of servers using Apache (which is not mutually exclusive of Windows) is not so easy. As a result, your representation of Netcraft ping figures as marketshare is inaccurate, and your monthly tracking, even further from the truth.

I did find some other interesting data on the Netcraft survey you reference. It turns out Akamai, one of the leading proponents of Linux systems has decided to switch to Windows 2000 systems for streaming media caching. Must be bad news for VA Linux since Akamai was recently reported as taking 20% of their Linux volume.
