The Supreme Court is not supposed to render decisions based on public opinion, it is supposed to render decisions based on the law and the Constitution. Many of the basic freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution are not popular, especially when the people exercising them are members of minority groups, by virtue of opinion, race, religious persuasion, or whatever. The courts are one of the few institutions protecting the rights of the minority from the tyranny of the minority.
