What a great story about your son, and what a greater coincidence about the picture...
I ran across it and I thought it was perfect to show my ideal way of putting up living in a demagoguery.
As Mencken says:
We live in a land of abounding quackeries, and if we do not learn how to laugh we succumb to the melancholy disease which afflicts the race of viewers-with-alarm... In no other country known to me is life as safe and agreeable, taking one day with another, as it is in These States. Even in a great Depression few if any starve, and even in a great war the number who suffer by it is vastly surpassed by the number who fatten on it and enjoy it. Thus my view of my country is predominantly tolerant and amiable. I do not believe in democracy, but I am perfectly willing to admit that it provides the only really amusing form of government ever endured by mankind.
Above all, I have learned that life is short and when I encounter people who simply argue in circles building an entire fallacious argument simply because they want to see the world according to their own particular view and are capable of arguing without logic... [Ah ! but we live in a dream-a-goguery, everyone has the right to their opinion] --screw logical thinking and simple facts...
Then, it is time for a cold one ! *g*
A picture is worth 1000 words, and my oh my, those glasses sure hit the spot !
One of the angriest was a very Christian coach whose name, changed by one letter, just happened to be used as a caption for your picture. Coach T****** relaxes after the big game with quarterback ***** with a cold one.
The quarterback was also a very strong Christian-- he was the one who always knelt down and led the prayers on the field after every game.
I love it !! I can picture their faces as they read the caption, but frankly I fail to understand the picture would cause such an uproar, then again, I am sure the picture was the last straw that broke the camel's back.
My son is an outspoken atheist. ANd he also is not easily intimidated. First Amendment! First Amendment!!! He screamed.
My most emphatic congratulations to your son, you do not know how well I understand this situation. But I also understand your husband.
One has to choose the battles, and there are many that are NOT worth fighting for.
That is one of the things I hate the most about fundamentalists zealots, the captains of the gods armies know how many foot soldiers they have, and they love to use them making arguments in circles, they know that individuals cannot afford to lose time in stupid fights.
So, they make the stupidiest arguments relentlessly.
I am glad the picture hit the spot and made you laugh. |
