I think second and third trimester abortion should not be used for family planning/birth control. The survey you posted said that 2/3 thought it should be illegal except to save the life of the mother. That seems very simplistic.

There are other reasons for second and third trimester abortions, which I did allude to, namely, when genetic testing demonstrates that the child has some sort of birth defect. It's unfortunate that the technology still does not exist to determine this in the first trimester.

When Senator Alan Simpson was on Hardball several months ago, he stated that he voted against the Partial Birth Abortion bill because he did not think that the Senate should be in the business of telling doctors what they should be able to do for their patients, that's within the physician-patient relationship. I agree, for the most part.

But I think if people were asked whether they thought that a perfectly healthy, viable (say, eight months gestation) baby still in the uterus of a perfectly healthy woman should be killed for reasons of family planning, far more than two thirds would be opposed. 99.9% would be my guess.

By deliberately writing the bill so broadly, Congress wrote a bill that most could have predicted would be struck down, so the practice of infanticide for purposes of family planning is still legal. Shame.
