Peter...that's odd, that you and others don't know of any
case where shorters manipulated a stock. So, I take it that
you think there is only one way for a stock to be manipulated? The company has to be a bogus one and then
really smart people find this out and in hordes decend on a
thread to "wise up" their fellow investors so they won't
lose money...right? And, of course, these smart people
have no stake in the company one way or another...they haven't taken a short position to profit from the falling
stock price as investors panic and sell out...right?

Interesting. IF that's what you believe...

I'll name one, for example only...in this case both a hypster senerio and a basher senerio happened to the same
company at the same time. PAIR, Pairgain Technologies.
A hypster, issued a bogus press release...it hit all the
threads and PR newswires. Stock price begain to climb.
Didn't even take a day to discover it was a bogus press
release put out by a Pairgain employee wanting to make a
fast buck. Once that news hit the newswires the shorters
invaded PAIR threads in hordes with all kinds of stories
to make the price fall faster and harder. Such as: PAIR'S
management had to know about the press release, PAIR's
management had been defrauding investors for years, the
companies products were no longer viable. In truth, PAIR
had lost a major contract before all this took place and
missed earnings so the stock price was down already... bashers claimed they were losing many more and just hadn't told us about it yet. Stock price fell sharply, quickly.

Who got hurt? Honest investors.
Which hurt the stock price more? The hypster or the shorters? Both. However, without a doubt the short sellers
made a great deal more profits.

I was/am a Pairgain long term holder...I didn't sell on
the good news nor on the bad. I believed in my research
and the company and held thru the fray...believing in the
fundamentals of Pairgain and the reasons why I invested
in the first place. ADC Telecommunications just completed
the buyout of Pairgain on June 29, 2000.

Only time will tell with COII...que sera, sera.
