Taipei, July 3 (Bloomberg) -- Peter Blackmore, senior vice president for

worldwide sales and service at Compaq Computer Corp., the world's

largest seller of personal computers, made the following comments about

sales, inventory, the AlphaServer product line and wireless technologies.

On overall demand:

``June shipments worldwide were exactly what we had planned. We hit our

objectives for shipments.

``We now have the strongest product line-up we've ever had in our history.'

On a downgrade Friday by Salomon Smith Barney Inc. analyst Richard

Gardner, who said Compaq retail channel inventories were too high:

``The SSB report was completely erroneous. Phone around to

retailers, and you'll find nothing wrong with channel inventory. It was

an unfortunate report' and a ``ridiculous report.'

On sales of its AlphaServer GS server, introduced in May:

``Well over 300 orders have been received. It's been hugely successful,

winning a lot of business from the competition.

``We said $1 billion in sales this year (from AlphaServer GS), and we are on

track to do this.'

The server is targeted at high-end users who need to run Internet Web sites

or other complex tasks in communications, finance and the like, he said. An

average system costs about $350,000 to $400,000.

Customers in the U.S. include E*trade Group Inc., while Asian customers

include Hong Kong's ESD Services and Taiwan's Far EasTone

Telecommunications Ltd.

Just sick of Analysts who act for personal gains. I can assure you that

SSB is not behind Gardner on this call.
