I don't think Cotton Mather (nor his father Increase was C of E. They were Puritans. Cotton may have approved the hangings, but he was hardly the leader. He questioned the use of "spectral evidence" to condemn and was a very scientific man. I believe he was made a member of the Royal Society. He introduced innoculation for small pox into America. He was very kind to the boy Benjamin Franklin.
