More Rambus Causing More Shortages

Lower RDRAM yields eroding memory capacity

Even though it's finally picking up steam, Rambus DRAM (RDRAM) still has a knack for making trouble.

The growing use of Rambus DRAM is making overall memory shortages worse because lower RDRAM yields are eating up production capacity that would otherwise build more memory devices of other types. That is the storm warning from Samsung Semiconductor Inc., the leading supplier of RDRAMs.

"As the industry moves to Rambus, shortages get worse. Rambus is difficult to build and absorbs capacity because of lower yields," said Bob Eminian, Samsung's vice president of e-business solutions and general manager of its MyMemoryStore.com online direct-sales effort..."
