If the US didn't exist, who would have stood up to the Nazis? The communists?

If the north american colonies had not separated from the mother country, they would probably have stood up to the Nazis a good deal earlier. I see no reason to think that they wouldn't have stood up to the communists as well, though they probably would have done it with a little more intelligence: the Europeans avoided much of the ideological excess that went with American anti-communism.

I suspect that you don't know - because you don't want to know - about many of the things that were done in your name and with your money under the guise of fighting communism. We supported tyranny and opposed democracy in many countries, causing a huge amount of suffering in the process and actually strengthening the forces we were trying to oppose. We allowed ourselves to be played like puppets by tinpot dictators who cast themselves as "the only alternative to the communists". Someday maybe we will take our head out of the sand, admit that we were wrong, and try to make amends.

Maybe.
