None of that changes the basic principle that the mandate of the court is to interpret the law according to their judgment, not according to opinion polls. Public opinion can and does influence the selection of justices, which is a political act, but it is not supposed to influence justices once they are appointed. The system is set up that way to make sure that the rights of minorities are respected and the justice system does not devolve into a lynch mob.
