I don't think the Manila mango and the Ataulfo are the same thing.

I first experienced the mango when I was a student in Mexico. They were served impaled on a big, flat fork and eaten like a popsicle. I recall getting fiber stuck in my teeth when I bit into them.

It was much, much later that they became available in groceries in my part of the world. They were the same variety as the ones I had in Mexico, which I assume now was the Manila. I recall making a point to cut them up into small pieces before eating to avoid the problem of fiber in the teeth.

Over time, the Manila was replaced by the Tommy Atkins variety in the groceries. I was really surprised when I saw the Ataulfo just recently. It is shaped like the Manila but much smaller--maybe 4-5 inches end to end--and bright yellow. The mouth feel is richer than the Manila and, best of all, there is no annoying fiber. I sure hope I can find them again. I noticed on that Web page I posted that the London company will soon be shipping to retail customers. I've got it bookmarked.

This morning I shall enjoy the other half of my papaya. I'll forgive you for dissing my favorite fruit. I'll be serving it with lime, but not soap. <g>
