Dan3,

My understanding is that AMD flash carries a premium over Intel because it supports more cycles.

AMD 1.8V 2M/16 Am29DS323D claim 1000000 write cycles

Intel 1.8V 2M/16 28F320D18 claim 100000 write cycles

For a disc controller that is only reconfigured a few times the difference probably doesn't matter.

The crappy flash chip has a big "Intel Flash" logo on it, so there is no doubt who made it.

It's only one data point, but I'd guess it's more direct knowledge than you have.

It may not even be one data point. How do you know for certain that the programming algorithm had been correctly programmed, or that some other problem caused the failure to update?

John
