Nah, Rambus doesn't really fit the Mafia analogy, the Mafia supplies its own muscle. Rambus would be just another has-been startup without the brilliant minds of Intel and their attempted deep-throat job with bs-ram.

Unlike Rambus, Intel is entitled to a certain degree of arrogance, of course. They got a long history of good engineering and execution, until fairly recently. Of course, it's far from clear if Intel much likes the little Rambus monster they've created at this point. It's their problem, though. Unless somebody else caves, I think that overall Rambus is still our friend.
