The three will initially invest Y60bn (Dollars 565m) in the new facilities, aiming to start producing 12-inch silicon wafers in early 2002 to meet growing demand for next-generation semiconductor chips. They will invest an additional Y30bn later to increase monthly production to 200,000 units from an initially planned 100,000, they said. The plan to mass-produce 12-inch wafers, which are more advanced than the previous mainstream eight-inch wafers, reflects rising demand for chips with high-capacity memory, increasingly used for personal computers and cellular phones that deliver visual images, Sumitomo Metal said.
