TOKYO, July 6 Reuters - Shares in Japan's chipmakers plunged on Thursday, tailing their U.S. counterparts, after Salomon Smith Barney on Wednesday downgraded its investment rating on the industry to neutral from outperform.

Sumitomo Marine Asset Management's Sakakibara said the bearish outlook on the sector was not a market consensus and that chipmakers could rebound if other influential analysts offered positive views.

Okasan's Ishijima was also upbeat. "Capital expenditure and demand for semiconductors are just starting to surge here in Japan and I think stocks like Toshiba will attract more buying into August," he said.
