I think Whittington's call in 1996 was based on eroding prices for DRAM, as a leading indicator. At that time, DRAM fabs were by far the biggest customers for semi equip. Nobody looked at cell phones as a leading indicator back then.

I remember on the chat boards we hated him for causing stock prices in the sector to tank. We thought he was given far too much attention. But he proved to be exactly right.
