Taipei, July 5, 2000 (CENS)--Acer Peripherals Inc. has obtained mobile phone orders from major international manufacturers, and also recently signed an OEM contract with AudioVox, a manufacturer in the U.S., executives of the firm said Wednesday.
Acer Peripherals and AudioVox have signed the contract for one year. Both sides will cooperate to manufacture dual band mobile phones initially, but expect to expand the production into CDMA (code division multiple access) mobile phones in the future, executives of Acer Peripherals said.
Previously, AudioVox ordered three million mobile phones per year from Acer Peripherals. Due to the limited production scale and shortages of key components in the upstream industry, Acer Peripherals can delivery only one million units within the year, however.
In the past year, Acer Peripherals mainly churned out mobile phones for Motorola under the OEM basis. The Taiwanese firm also obtained other mobile phone orders from NEC of Japan early this year.
As a major mobile phone distributor in the U.S., AudioVox's sales of CDMA mobile phones in both U.S. and Central American markets have done well over the past few years. The firm's CDMA mobile phones are currently regarded as one of the three major brands in the U.S. market.
AudioVox expects its sales of CDMA mobile phones will reach 10 million units in 2000. This will help the firm rank as one of the most important secondary mobile phone manufacturer in the U.S., executives of Acer Peripherals indicated.
In addition to the supply source of Acer Peripherals, AudioVox also purchases its CDMA mobile phones from Toshiba of Japan and Samsung of South Korea, respectively. AudioVox decided to cooperate with Acer Peripherals, thus moving its CDMA mobile phones into Europe, especially Denmark and Bulgaria, in the near future.
