Strategically, it seems there is no longer any need to "freeze out" DDR. RMBS/INTC seem content to make DDR a poor choice from a price plus performance perspective (as the licensing royalties will obviously add cost to DDR chips -- more so than the royalties charged on RDRAM). So it makes sense -- at least to me -- that INTC would be willing to bury part of the hatchet with VIA -- and allow for DDR on the desktop. How will this impact RMBS? May depend on what comes of the coming (imo only) RMBS/VIA litigation. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if some of those issues were already worked out in rough form during the INTC/VIA negotiations. Though who knows?
