Hot Jazz to Sizzle in Hartford 2000 Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz Finalizes Weekend Line-up of Free Music And Fun in Bushnell Park Chuck Mangione, Nicolas Payton, John Scofield, Ramsey Lewis on Roster HARTFORD, Conn., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- When the temperature gets hot, the music will get even hotter in Bushnell Park this month. Some of the top names in jazz -- Chuck Mangione, Nicolas Payton, John Scofield and the legendary Ramsey Lewis -- have been lined up to snap, crackle and bebop at the 2000 Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, July 21-23. ( Photo: newscom.com ) These jazz greats are on board to headline more than 20 hours of free music emanating from the insurance city's celebrated outdoor music festival, which has been hailed by The Hartford Courant as "a worthy role model for all major, free outdoor cultural events in the city of Hartford." Sponsored by The Hartford Financial Services Group, The Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz (GHFJ) is now in its ninth year. Festival organizers predict their biggest and best music fest ever. In addition to showcasing some of the most stellar names in jazz, the GHFJ will feature an array of local talent on the festival's second stage, a late-night jazz carousel, an arts-and-crafts marketplace, and, on Thursday July 20th, a fund-raising performance by pop saxophonist Marion Meadows at the Arch Street Tavern. At 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 23, Christ Church Cathedral will hold a special "Jazz Mass" to coincide with the musical festivities. The GHFJ officially begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday from the park's main stage, The Thomas D. Harris IV Pavilion, which was named in memory of the longtime GHFJ director who died in 1999. On Saturday and Sunday, music from the main stage resumes at 4:00 p.m. Headlining this year's festival will be guitarist John Scofield at 8:15 p.m. on Friday; flugelhornist Chuck Mangione at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday; and trumpeter Nicolas Payton at the grand finale at 8:15 p.m. on Sunday. The inimitable Ramsey Lewis Trio will perform at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Other notables include Bamboo Forest featuring Steve Reid, Mario Pavone, TanaReid, Bob Baldwin, Libre and New Orleans' Los Hombres Calientes. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, a second stage near the park's carousel will feature area talent between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. The festival also will host an arts-and-crafts marketplace during the weekend. Saturday night revelers can extend their fun into the wee hours at a special "Jazz Carousel and Cappuccino." From 10:00 p.m. to midnight, music lovers can take a spin on Bushnell Park's historic carousel for $1 a ride, enjoy a latte or two and listen to the tunes of Smooth Connections, a Farmington Valley-based jazz combo. The music continues on Sunday morning, July 23, when the city's Christ Church Cathedral holds its first-ever "Jazz Mass" at 10:30 a.m., featuring Ross Tucker and his Hot Cat Jazz Band. All members of the community are invited to attend. Christ Church is located at 45 Church Street in Hartford. Jazz/pop music lovers can enjoy a special preview of the festivities at a fund-raiser performance by saxophonist Marion Meadows at Hartford's Arch Street Tavern on Thursday, July 20. Meadows, a headliner at last year's festival, will perform to help raise money for the non-profit festival. Tickets are $30 per person. For reservations, call 860-872-5485.
