AutoData Introduces New SmartMemory Technology
Patented Technology Learns On-The-Fly
MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 13, 2000--AutoData(R)Systems, a unit of Electro-Sensors, Inc. (Nasdaq: ELSE), introduces its new SmartMemory(TM)technology that learns different hand print styles. This technology is incorporated into AutoData's newest Scannable Office automated data collection software that began shipping the end of March.
SmartMemory's patented technology plays a major role in the accuracy of hand print character recognition. SmartMemory recognizes specific shapes in a dynamic fashion. As a result, it can easily learn hundreds of thousands of different shape variations representing a single character. As its name implies, SmartMemory gets smarter over time, making it totally unique.
Here is how SmartMemory currently works in conjunction with Scannable Office software. The software is used to create a scannable form. An individual completes the survey or questionnaire, which is then scanned with an imaging scanner. The respondent's data is analyzed by Scannable Office and automatically placed in a Microsoft Access database, Excel spreadsheet, or ODBC data source of choice. Check mark responses and hand printed characters (name, address, SSN, date, etc.) are analyzed and must be transformed from ink-and-paper into digital format. Since handwriting styles differ dramatically from person to person, it is extremely important that the technology interpreting the characters be as accurate and dynamic as possible. SmartMemory analyzes each character as it is scanned, and makes its interpretation based on an expanding character shape library. As more characters are scanned and interpreted, accuracy of character recognition improves over time. As a result of this growing intelligence, operator intervention is required less frequently to verify character accuracy.
SmartMemory has evolved over the past 10 years to be the most powerful adaptive pattern recognition technology available. Originating from a model of biological neural networks that processes visual patterns of information, the algorithm has been integrated in SmartMemory software. In addition to its current use in intelligent character recognition (ICR), other applications include machine vision and image compression.
According to Larry Werth, Chief Scientist and SmartMemory developer, "SmartMemory technology is a breakthrough in character recognition. The potential of SmartMemory applications is limitless. Many diverse fields can take advantage of our adaptive neural network. We are pleased to make this technology available to our data collection customers at this time."
AutoData Systems, founded in 1989, offers a comprehensive line of automated data collection solutions to automate forms creation and data entry from paper forms. These patented systems can read bar codes, check marks, alphanumeric hand printing, and image capture from scanned or faxed images. Over 3,000 systems installed in healthcare and commercial organizations worldwide are processing forms in a fraction of the time previously required using manual data entry.
