<< JM was in the US with his immediate family. He could have chosen to stay. >>

Yes, I agree. But, he had the choice because he was in the U.S. If he was back in Cuba, he would have had no freedom of choice.

<< Even though I have never personally experienced the special love a mother has for her offspring ... >>

Hmmm!? I've got a good idea. You could adopt me! I am a cute, cuddly 50ish, easy going guy, who is not opinionated.

<< I can say with absolute confidence that I would be willing to accept the worst that Castro could do to me in order that my offspring could escape life in Cuba, if it's as bad as you think it is. >>

As bad as I think that it is? The evidence is in the thousands of dead Cuban men, women and children, floating in the strait between Cuba and Miami.

<< I suspect that life in Cuba for JM is not so bad as to make it necessary to sacrifice his older relatives. >>

I almost agree with you. OTOH, it would be almost impossible for JM to flee Cuba after being declared a national hero. Castro would never allow that embarrassment, and will keep a close watch on JM and his family.

<< But that was for Juan Miguel to judge and he did so. >>

As such was another's choice, when he chose the electric chair.
