Rajala, thanks for your comment because I always like to hear both sides of the story.

I notice you said:

This confuses me because I thought the head of QCOM invented the process while a professor. He then founded QCOM and wrote a zillion patents, the story goes, to cover the concept thoroughly enough so that anyone wanting to use CDMA would have to go through QCOM.

From what you say, CDMA was already around in use. Could you give me 4 or 5 urls to documents showing how widely used CDMA was before the early 1990s when the patents were done on CDMA by QCOM? Thanks for your links because this should make things much clearer to me.
